WHO IS MRS.C?
Margaret C. Collier - I am entering my 37th year of teaching. As a geography teacher, I have been very fortunate to see many interesting places in the world in the last 12 years. The picture below was taken in 2005 in New Zealand on the South Island where "The Lord of the Rings" was filmed on location by Peter Jackson. The breath taking beauty of New Zealand is a geographical phenomenon.I was in New Zealand as a representive scholar for the English Speaking People's Union.
Born in Maryland, I went to college in Baltimore, Maryland, where I received an undergraduate degree in Art Education. Later, while living in West Virginia, I received my master's degree from the Marshall University and West Virginia College of Graduate Studies.I moved to Orlando, Florida in 1987 where I have continuously taught in the Seminole Public County School system. Along the way, I recieved my Specialist's Degree from the University of Florida. (GO GATORS!!!!!!)
I have been to many countries over the last few years, many times with other teachers and by writing competitive grants. This has taken me to Japan, China, Ukraine, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. The summer of 2010 I went on my own tour to Egypt and I have made several trips to Ukraine to work with teachers and students. I went to Costa Rica the fall of 2011 on a Toyota International Teacher's Grant.
When I received an award in 2000 from the USA Today Teachers recognition program and was made a member of their first team for that year, my life as a teacher changed. Suddenly, new vistas of exploration were open to me. My travels allowed me to open up the world to my students, by being able to share real life experiences with them. I have involved them in exchanges with their "global peers" through my program "Postal Pals". Former students participanted in the One World Classroom Art Exchange for the last 7 years. This year I encouraged my friends in Ukraine to have their schools participate and showcase their artistic talent and their interest in cultural geography.
Geography is a very important subject. It is my goal to help all students appreciate and understand the differences and similarities between world countries and their cultures.
